FARMERS AND TAXATION.

In the course of his reply to an address of welcome at the Bluff on Tuesday, Sir Joseph Ward said he was sorry to see that resolutions were being passed by farmers in regard to the income tax. Evidently the farming community did not realise how well it had been treated. Every other section of the community had been giving largely increased income taxation without, complaint. To enable New Zealand to play her part in the great war, sacrifices had to be made aud money had to be obtained. He thought that the farmers had the least to complain of, as, happily for them, the war had proved a remarkably good thing, and they were all doing uncommonly well, largely as a result of this great world-wide war. Everything that the Taxation Department could do to help the farmers to make up their income tax returns would be done, and the Department would, where necessary, send out capable men to assist the farmers in order to enable them to make up the returns.
