EXCITING SCENE IN AUCKLAND.
ALLEGED SHIRKER NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE. Auckland, Dec. i. There was an exciting scene prior to the departure of the Makura for Vancouver last night. It was reported that a young man ot military age was about to leave the country. About thirty of his employees assembled on the wharf, having obtained an hour’s leave from their employer to see the departing visitor before he left New Zealand’s shores. As he arrived with his luggage there were loud cries of “shirker!” A cart containing the would-be passenger and his luggage was turned round, headed up the wharf and was uot allowed to return until the ship was clear of the wharf. Meanwhile the so-called shirker had a lively ten minutes Eventually the jeering crowd ac. ....allied the cart and the badly-scared occupant a long way up the street.
