HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY’S SPRING SHOW.
The above show was brought to a successful conclusion last night. Contrary to expectations, the cut blooms show no signs of going off. The attendances were good throughout and the judging in all classes appeared to give general satisfaction. The Borough Band and Mr Betty’s orchestra enlivened the proceedings with spirited musical selections. Mrs Woods was kept busy in the sweets stall and Mrs Newth and her assistants excelled themselves in the tea rooms, which were 'particularly well patronised. The cut blooms, although not so numerous as might have been expected, presented a fine showing. Vegetables and fruit were very spare, but autumn is the time for a big display in this connection. The cookery class was well represented and included some excellent exhibits. The fancy work attracted a good deal of attention and some very artistic pieces of work were displayed. The pot plants were excellent. The school work was a feature of the show and in this connection the local children come out with flying colours. There were only two entries for model gardens, but they were real works of art and attracted a good deal of notice and iavourable comment. The entries in the patriotic class were disappointing. The stewards and judges carried out their duties satisfactorily. On the whole the show was well up to its predecessors. The prize list appears on page 4. I
