THE END IS NOT IN SIGHT.”

TnU great struggle for the preservation ot Eiheity and Progress, tor the existence of nationality and democracy, is far from being over. In the King’s words, ‘The end is not in sight.” Util, none the less, if we do onr duly the. end is sure. In the words of the Auckland Herald, It we were only fit to be slaves to German masle/s ; if we had no better vision of the future than the glimpses into the “Kultured” world, dear to German writers, that German armies give us; if we shrank from further sacrifice, and if onr remaining men refused to fight until German drlllmaslets kicked them into German barracks ; then the heroic volunteers who have gone to the fighting line, and stand there bebetween us ami “Kultur,” might gladly die in their glory and leave us to a fate we should most richly deserve. Happily that is not so ; nor can we forget the issue while Germany remains able to remind us. For II ever there were a power for evil that stirred to Irfe the good that dwells in every humane and liberty-loving heart, such a power dominates and governs and guides Germany today. That power is entrenched not only in the ambition of the Kaiser and ot the military organisation long trained tor aggressive war, but also in every greed and covetousness and lust of a people in whom consideration for others and respect for the rights of others has been wilfully and intentionally destroyed. Its-manifestations cannot be subdued or chocked or hidden, for it has taken possession of the German nation as an insanity that mistakes itself for superiority ; it would compel us to destroy it were there any hesitation in our purpose or reluctance in.our minds.
