The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, October 26, 1915. LIFE SAVING CLUB.

Tmk Foxton public—iu fact Pal.merslon and Feilding and other districts, which make our popular seaside resort a rendevons for summer holidays or for healthrecruiting purposes-—are indebted to the Wellington centre of the Royal Life Saving Society for the demonstration in methods of rescue and resusitation of the apparently drowned, given at the seaside on Sunday last. To quote the Wellington President’s words, it is nothing short of criminal to neglect the formation of a club at the seaside where hundreds of people assemble for bathing and fishing throughout the summer months. Already the river and seaside have taken toll of valuable lives, and the danger still lurks. For every fatality there is a hundred narrow and miraculous escapes, brought about in the main by sheer carelessness. A person’s reliance on the fact that he or she is a strong swimmer goes for nothing, unless they possess a knowledge of dealing with persons in difficulties. The strongest swimmer may be easily drowned by a child unless skilled in methods of release. The society exists for the purpose of disseminating knowledge in lifesaving methods, which should be a compulsory subject in the curriculum of every school. We have strong swimmers in our midst who would, if approached, join such a club, and take up the course laid down by the society. We shall be pleased to take the names of all willing to become members. We may mention that Dr. Mandl has kindly consented to deliver lectures to those handing in their names, giving a description of the air passages and lungs, the reasons why we breathe and how the process Is carried out, and an explanation of the Schater method of restoring respiration, and how to treat a patient after breathing is established. Mr o’P>rien, who holds the society’s medallion, has consented to act as instructor in the land drills, etc. It only now remains for those willing to assist to hand in their names, and the nucleus of a strong chib will be established.
