FOXTON’S RAILWAY SERVICE.
Some time ago the local Borough Council passed a resolution asking that better carriage accommodation should be provided on the Foxton branch line, and at Monday night’s meeting the following reply was received from Mr E. H. Hiley, General Manager ot New Zealand Railways : "With reference to the representations made by you urging that more up-to-date carriages, fitted with lavatory accommodation, should be run on the Foxton branch line, I have the honour to inform you that I have had the matter inquired into, and find that although lavatories are not provided on aU cars, there i? at least one on every train. I regret that the Department cannot at the present lime supply more modern cars for use on the Foxton branch, as those now running are comfortable riding cars although they are not of the latest main line type. In order to accede to your Council’s request the Department would require to transfer carriages off the longer main line runs, which would be inadvisable, as the comfort of long distance passengers must be considered before that of passengers making short journeys. It is ultimately intended, however, to replace cars on branch lines with more modern vehicles, and when circumstances permit the Foxton branch will receive due consideration along with other lines where similar services are running.
