THE FLAX GRUB.
Mr W. H. Field, M.P., recently asked the Minister of Agriculture whether the Government have yet discovered any effective method of checking the ravages of the flax grub which is threatening our industry ; and, if so, what the remedy is, and whether it may lie given the utmost publicity, so that flax-growers may lose no time in taking steps to check the evil before it assumes more serious proportions ? The Hon. Mr MacDonald replied that the only suggestions that can be advanced at present are (r) the flooding, where practicable, of the fields during April and October to drown the insects while pupating, and (?.) exhaustive research to discover natural enemies that would control the pest. The question of the Government’s undertaking such lesv-ir'li will be considered if the i nermann millers will indicate to what extent they arc prepared In provide the cost.
