FOOTPATH CONSTRUCTION.
Certain Councillors are bestirring themselves in the matter of improved footpaths, and notices of motion dealing with this matter are to be discussed at the next meeting of the Council. It would be very nice to have asphalted and concrete kerbed footpaths in the most frequented parts of the borough if the Council’s revenue would permit such work being done, but it should be remembered by residents and Councillors that only a limited amount can lie expended each year on such works out of general revenue unless street maintenance is to be sacrificed. The policy suggested by the Mayor is a wise one in connection with footpaths, i.e., to do a little at a time in the most necessary localities, and to do it thoroughly. The alternative is to raise a loan for this purpose and complete the work throughout the borough, which we do not think the Council would be justified in doing at present. Good progress has been made of late with footpath construction, and if a little patience is exercised the work will proceed satisfactorily in the localities where footways are most needed.
