The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, October 2, 1915. AUCTION SALES FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS.

Tiik sale by auction of gills at picture entertainments is just about played out locally, and we are pleased to hear that there will be no more sales of this nature in future. Gifts will be accepted by donors, but they will be allowed to accumulate until there are sufficient to dispose of by means of an art union or special sale. Those who attend picture entertainments as a rule have, or are, contributing liberally to the various funds, and it is not fair to mar their pleasure, badgering for bids. Of course, there are a few in the community who could well afford to contribute something for the comfort of our brave lads who are shedding their blood in place of the stingy brigade who, it they gave according to their means, would obviate such catch-penny methods for raising patriotic funds which are adopted. But they don’t go to picture entertainments, and when they give directly to the patriotic funds, it is with such bad grace and with such paltry excuses that those concerned in raising funds prefer to leave them alone. They are cave-dwellers ot selfishness, and the best friends of the enemy in this country. Their selfishness has shut out the supreme sacrifice, toil, suffering and hardship of those who are doing the fighting for them. Anyhow, the local general public, and particularly the poorer people, have given generously, and we are pleased to know that they will not be further worried with auction sales at picture entertainments.
