SCENE IN THE HOUSE.
MR WILFORD ASKED TO WITHDRAW.
In the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon, Mr T. M. Wilford asked the Minister for Defence it a further hospital ship were necessary, and if so would the cost be raised by taxation, so that all would participate in the contribution. The Minister for Defence said that he thought the time had arrived when another hospital ship should be sent to the front, and he related the details of the Marama, which it has already been announced is to be sent. The taxpayers of the country would pay for the charter of the ship and the fitting-up expenses,, as in the case of the Maheno. He would be very loth indeed to take away from the women of the country the opportunity to do the good service they had in the case of the Maheno. His Excellency the Governor bad in hand the same work in regard to the Marama as in the case of the Maheno.
Mr Wilford : There you are with your dirty answers again! The Speaker asked for a withdrawal, but Mr Wilford said he would substitute the word “typical ” for dirty. This did not meet with the approval of the House, and by 40 to 17, Mr Wilford was suspended for the remainder of the sitting.
