HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
A committee meeting of the above was held last night, the President (Mr G. H. Stiles) occupied the chair. Apologies for absence were received from several members. The President, in submilling a statement of receipts and expenditure of the recent Bulb Show, said he desired to congratulate the Society upon the financial result. He had compared the figures with previous shows, ami the balance to credit this year was in excess oi any previous bulb show. One or two extras had been added this year, but the increase in Ibis connection was not material. lie added that the show dale had been fixed a week or so too early lor some ot the best blooms, but this could be remedied in future. The show on the whole was very successful. One exhibitor, Mrs Galland, had been very successful, and it would be seen that she bad not only annexed most of the trophies, but had also won the Citizens’ Trophy two years In succession, a very fine record. While this may seem a little one-sided, said the President, the blooms merited the awards, and it should stimulate local growers to greater efforts in the future. The receipts totalled £2O if>s sd, and the expenditure balance of ifis i id. Out of this balance the cost of sweets had to he deducted, but this was a small amount. Thu statement was received. Mr Lnmsden was added In the sub committee appointed to gn into the question of finance and other matters of importance tn the Society’s we Ifare. The question of nntilying members and officers at the commencement of the financial year that their subscriptions were due, instead of letting them automatically drop off the membership 1 oil, was discussed, aud it was decided in future lo notify each member.
Votes of thanks were passed to the stewards and judges who officiated at the Bulb Show, and to Mesdames Saunders and Hillman, who conducted the tea-room and sweets stall respectively, to Mr W. E. Barber for the gift of a sheep, and to the Borough Band for their assistance.
Accounts were passed for payment. The question of introducing a class for children’s model gardens was brought up by Mrs Saunders, who staled that they had been a success elsewhere. Mrs Saunders offered a prize ot 20s for this class. The committee decided to.add the class, and Mrs Saunders was thanked for her donation.
The dates for the Spring Show were fixed for November 25th and 26th, and for the Autumn Show, March 9th aud loth, 1916.
It was decided that the subcommittee meet next week, and the general committee the week following to finally fix the schedule for the Spring aud Autumn shows.
