FOXTON RACING CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual general meeting of members of the Foxton Racing Chjb was held in the Council Chambers last night. In point of numbers the meeting was the most successful in the history of the club, between 40 and 50 members being present. The meeting was presided over by Mr J. R. Whyte, president of the club.
The annual report and balancesheet, a summary of which appeared in Tuesday’s issue, was taken as read and adopted. In formally moving the adoption the chairman said he had again to congratulate members on the result of the past year’s work, the balance sheet disclosing a very satisfactory position indeed. The receipts from all sources were smaller than the previous year, brought about mainly through the amount received from nominations and acceptances being less than the last year. There were also small decreases in the amounts received for members’ subscriptions, publican’s booth, raoecards and totalisator. He was pleased to notice that during the year the committee had donated ,£l5O to the Patriotic Funds, and felt sure their action would be confirmed by the members. During the past twelve mouths uo less a sum than ,£15,000 had been given by racing clubs in the Dominion to the various patriolunds, the splendid example set by the Canterbury Jockey Club in donating the whole of their net ' profits to the patriotic funds being followed by other clubs, and the Manavvatu Racing Club had decided to use the whole of the profits of their next meeting in the same way. Suggestions had been made that racing should be curtailed during the war, but personally he thought a great deal more could be done in assisting the funds for alleviating suffering by continuing racing and making donations from the profits to the various patriotic and relief funds. He referred with regret io the loss the dub had sustained during the past twelve months by the death ot two of its members, Mr Arthur Edwards, who had resided all his life in the distrht, and Mr George Gray, Mr Gray had always taken a keen and active interest in the welfare of the club, had held office for something like 20 years and on bis departure from the district had been made a life member, Mr Whyte said that at the last annual meeting he had made the suggestion that the stakes should be increased and he still thought that it would pay the club well to put on an additional >£2oo or ,£3OO. This, however, was a matter for the committee. The election ot officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr John Stevens ; president, Mr J. R, Whyte ; vice-presidents, Messrs O. Robinson, C. Robinson, W. E. Barter and F. E. Jeuks. For the positions of nine stewards there were seventeen nominations and upon a ballot being taken the result was as follows : A. E. Admore 4, J. V. Burr 29, R. Bryant 28, G. Coley 37, F. S. Easton 37, L. R. Freeman 36, K. Furrie 14, F. W. Gardes 5, H. G. Hammond 36, T. Henderson 57 W, Hooker xo, C. Hunt 27, P. Lumsden 18, C. L. Mandl 38, A. D. Scott 16, C. Simmons 9, H. S. Thynne 28. The following were accordingly declared elected : Messrs Dr. Mandl, G. Coley, F. S. Easton, L. R. Freeman, H. G. Hammond, J. V, Burr. R. Bryant, C. Hunt and H. S. Thynne ; treasurer, Mr E, R. Freeman ; clerk of scales, Mr J. V. Burr ; clerk of course, Mr C. Petersen and surgeon, Dr Mandl, The following new members were elected : Messrs J. M. Kelly, K. Easton, C. Preston, C. and H. Satherley, Wi Hemera, P. Coley, S. Draper, A. Heasman and G. Farmer. On the motion of the chairman a hearty vole of thanks was accorded the retiring officials fur the energy displayed dining the past year. A motion by Mr Ball that all members be tarnished with voting papers for the election of stewards and that they be allowed to forward their votes if not in attendance at the annual meeting was lost.
The meeting terminated after passing a vote of thanks to the chair.
