The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, September 4, 1915. JUNIOR CADETS.

The Defence Department committed a grave and serious mistake when it dropped the school cadet movement the siin/iuiiin boiiini/ of military training. The senior cadet movement: is supposed to take its place. Does it? Let any of the military officials in mufti pay an inspection to these farcical parades or courses of alleged instruction of senior cadets and compare them with the strict, discipline and thoroughness of the junior cadet movement under the capable training of our State School teacher officers, and they will soon realise the blunder that has been perpetrated. Some of our smartest lads at present serving at the front have to thank the junior cadet movement for proficiency and promotion. It would he far better to dovetail the junior cadet movement into our present military trainingscheme and drop the senior cadets altogether. The authorities should know by present experience that they cannot get that enthusiasm, discipline, and lasting good out of the lads by starting at the bobble-de-hoy stage. The foundation for all that is best in military training must be laid in the primary schools.
