BULB SHOW.
The fifth annual Bulb Show, held under the auspices of the Foxton Horticultural Society, took place in the Town Hall on Thursday last, and was formally opened at 3 p.m. by the Mayor (Mr Alf. Fraser). The entries were a few in excess of last year, but several local growers did not exhibit this year. Several of the classes were not, represented due to the fact that the date did not suit. The blooms shown included some magnificent specimens which called forth the admiration of the judge and public. The decorative classes displayed fine taste on the part of the competitors, and the tables were much admired. An extra class was added to the show, viz. children’s cookery, and although the number of exhibits was disappointing, the quality was highly commended by the judge. It is hoped that the children will take a keener interest in this class next year. The judging gave every satisfaction, and the stewards rendered in valuable assistance to exhibitors. One or two minor matters will in future have to be amended by the committee in connection with the conditions governing certain classes. A special word of praise is due to Mrs Saunders, who had charge of the tea-room and Mrs Hillman who supervised the sweets stall. The President (Mr Stiles) and his committee, and the energetic secretary (Mr Patterson) are to be congratulated upon the success of the exhibition. In opening the show, the Mayor referred to the good the society is doing in fostering a love for the beautiful, and referred to the attractiveness of a home with a garden, and the value of this asset, apart from the pleasure and profit of such a hobby. He referred to the good such societies were doing not only in Foxton, but throughout the Dominion, and the educational value of such institutions. The Mayor .said the local Society had done an immense amount of good, and must be regarded as one of the most important lactors in the progress and advancement of Foxton. During the eight years of its existence it has attracted exhibitors at its shows from Palmerston to Otaki. Referring to the progress of the Bulb Show he said in 1911, no entries; 1912, 126 entries ; igid, 301 entries; 1914, 246 entries ; and this year 247. He congratulated the committee on .having provided a special cooking competition for the school children, as it would tend to keep up the interest and perfect the knowledge gained a few months since, when cooking lessons were given by an expert obtained by the Borough Council. The thanks of the Society were due to those ladies who had travelled some distance to act as judges, and whose decision he was sure would give universal satisfaction. Alter making complimentary reference to the exhibits, the Mayor declared the show open amidst applause.

Citizens’ Trophy for three distinct varieties of daffodils, Mrs Galland 1, Hr-Rockell 2, Mrs W, Signal 3. 5 entries. The judge held over Mrs Galland’s entry in the Citizens’ Trophy on the ground that the blooms “King Alfred” were the product of bulbs costing probably more than 2s 6d each which, it so, would be contrary to the conditions governing the trophy entries. The committee investigated the matter and a catalogue was produced showing the market price of the bulb in question at 2-: bd or 24s per dozen. Upon this evidence the committee awarded the first prize to Mrs Galland, second to Mr Rockell and third to Mis Signal. The hat trimming competitions created a good deal ol interest and amusement. Miss Pearson was awarded first and Miss D. Signal second prize in the ladies competition, and Mr Guy Edwards and Mr Chas. Simmons in the gentlemen’s. The sheep weight guessing competition was won by Mrs Hillman (4334HJ5.), and Mr J. Evans (44 l 4 lbs.), the correct weight being 44lbs. Mr R. T. Betty’s orchestra played a number of selections during the evening and the Borough Band rendered a programme outside the hall.
