The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, September 2, 1915. EXPLOITATION SCOTCHED.

It is gratifying to know that Parliament has passed a Bill to prevent the public being exploited by grasping merchants in respect of the war tax on kerosene and benzine. The Bill provides that the maximum price for the refined mineral oils specified should be the same as the prices ruling for those goods on August 20, 1915. Any purchaser who was required to pay more than'this rate for oils purchased since the passing of the resolutions in the House Imposing the duty of qd per gallon on these oils would lie entitled to a refund. The Bill is to come into operation on September Ist. Already in this district we know of one case where a firm had notified a rise on stocks in hand. It is shameful to think that reputable Arms for the sake of greed would lend themselves to such immoral methods. Fancy adding the war tax to kerosene in stock upon which they have not paid the increased customs, to lie passed on to the public who have already contributed voluntarily to patriotic purposes. Its nothing more than barefaced robbery. But the drastic measure passed by Parliament has nipped their little game in the bud and consumers who have been compelled to purchase large or small quantities of kerosene from stocks in hand should see that they get it at the prices obtaining last month.

We do not think a tax on kerosene is justifiable and it is within the bounds of possibility, owing to protests both inside and out of the House, that it will have to be called off. The money proposed to be raised in this connection could be got in some other way, as pointed out by Dr. New* man in the House yesterday. A one per cent, tax on exports would tAore than cover the amount proposed to be raised by a duty on kerosene and petrol. An extra threepence on beer would return

ever, the attempt to exploit the public in respect of kerosene has been scotched.
