THE GAS WORKS.

MANAGER’S REPORT. The gas works manager reported as follows at Monday night’s Council meeting : "I beg to report that daring the month of July one new connection was made and fittings installed into one private residence. We received 56 )Z tons of coal. During the fine weat her v\ecleaned and painted the crown of the. gas holder and lower scrubber. The carbonising plant has done tairly well during the winter months, but one retort had to be let out of use last month. The heavy leakage at times was keeping onr make per ton rather low and the retorts now in actual use can he worked to better advantage. The question of tar storage will have to be considered at once. We are completely blocked. If the tar is to he kept for borough use it might he advisable to have tanks fixed in the yard where the asphalt is made. A concrete tank constructed in the yard at the works, say to hold 3000 gallons, would cost about £ls, or per thousand gallons for 3000 gallons or over. It may seem too much of a handicap on this year’s earnings to incur any further heavy items of expenditure. We have a large order of cookers coming to hand, also all costs of installing the new bench of retorts comes out ol revenue, and if we store the tar at the works the department would suffer unless we got a slight advance in price. Street lamps ; Yon will please note the amount of gas allocated to these is based on consumption shown on meter by Dr Mandi’s corner plus five per cent, which I estimate is a fair amount to allow for the irregularities in time, etc. in the other lamps. 1 will submit working cost of these lamps lor the present month (August) in time for your next meeting.” The report; was adopted with the exception of the clause referring to the construction of a concrete tank’for tar storage.
