BABY STARVERS.
Somk substantial penalties were imposed at Gisborne on Friday in four rases in which the defendants were charged with selling adulterated milk and milk deficient in solids. In one set of cases the Magistrate said : "The public must he protected in- some, way. This is an offence which calls tor exemplary punishment. Tire, cost of living in New Zealand is sufficiently high at present without robbing people in this way. I say robbed, tor J can’t describe it in any other way. It is deliberate robbery on the part of somebody. It is almost as bad as putting a hand in a man’s pocket and taking his money. It is very hard to say how long this sort ot thing has been going on. We had some cases a year ago, when I imposed substantial penalties, but ap*. patently it has not had the desired effect. Defendants will be fined /io and costs £1 iSs fid, in each of the four cases." Another defendant was fined £25 and costs for each of two offences, and two others were ordered to pay and costs with respect to each of the charges against them. At Otakl last week one person charged with selling milk adulterated with water was fined £SO and costs by Mr Poynton, S.M.
