SALVATION ARMY.
VISIT OF COMMISSIONER HODDER. Commissioner Horlder, in charge of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, paid his first official visit to the Foxton Corps yesterday. He was accompanied by Brigadier Tooraer, In charge ot Wellington division, and his secretary, Ensign Suter. The Mayor accorded tne Commissioner a civic welcome on his arrival. In the evening a public meeting was held in the Army Hall and despite the Inclement weather, was well attended. The Mayor presided and referred to the great work the Army is accomplishing for the uplifting ot mankind, not only in this country, but throughout the world. The Commissioner was received with a hearty round of applause. He expressed his pleasure at meeting with the Foxton Corps, and referred to the hospitality extended to him by the local corps. He then gave the meeting a most interesting address on the Army’s operations in Japan, where be had command for six years prior to succeeding Commissioner Richards in New Zealand. The manners and customs of the people were graphically portrayed and the rise and progress of the Army’s operations set out. The speaker was listened to with rapt interest throughout. At the conclusion the Mayor expressed his own and the gathering’s appreciation of the Commissioner’s address. The, usual compliment was paid to the Commissioner and Mayor. . Brigadier Tonmer announced that Adjutant Jenkins would be farewelled on promotion next week and his successors would be Adjutant Potter and Lieut. Campbell (two female officers) who would take up their duties next week.
