YOUNG MEN’S CLUB.
SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL FUNCTION. The Young Men’s Club, which was brought into being some time ago with the object of assisting . the Girls’ Guild financially, held a dance in the Masonic Hall last night. The interior of the building was artistically decorated, and the floor was like glass. Each member contributed a certain amount, one provided the music, and the ladies sent along an abundance of refreshments. A number of those unable to be present sent along donations. The gathering served the dual object of providing a social break for the girls and to supplement the Club’s w T eekly contributions of 23 6d each to the hind. The money is provided to keep the girls busy at work on necessary comforts for the wounded soldiers. The club, so far, has done famously in providing the sinews of war for the girls. The club membership is now about 34. Included among those present last night ‘ were the Mayor and several of the soldiers irom the Ranglotu camp, who spent a most enjoyable time. Mr S. Bryant officiated as M.C., and was ably assisted by Mr C. Simmons. Daring the evening, a wedding cake, previously bought by Mr Smith, of Moutoa, and donated to the Club, was auctioned by Mr Hornblow. After the auctioneer bad bought it in for 2s 6d, he submitted it for sale, and it was knocked down to the following bidders Mrs Gower ss, R. N. Spelrs ss, L. Couples 2s 6d, R. Barber 23 6d, Mrs Gower 2s 6d, Trentham Boys 2s 6d, Mrs Haynes 23. 6d, Mrs Seabury 2s 6d, Mrs Signal seur. 2s 6d, Mrs Auslin-Johnston 7s fid, Bertha Gower 2s fid, T. White ss, O. Robinson 2s fid, S. Bryant 2s fid, R. Munro 2s fid, Mrs AustinJohnston ss, S. Austin 2s fid, S. B. Collins 2s fid, E, Huntley 2s fid, J. Smith 2S fid, P. Clarke 23 fid, Alf. Fraser ss, C. Simmons ss, V. Robinson 2s fid, N. Bryant 2s fid, S. Barber 2s fid, A. J. Tullett 25 fid, G. Fraser 2s fid, H. Robinson 2s fid. The cake was then put up for final sale, and after some spirited bidding between Mrs Austin-Johnston and Mr O. Robinson, was finally knocked down to the former, amidst applause, for £5. On behalf of Mrs Austin-Johnston, the cake was presented to the soldiers, amidst cheers. Sergt. Con. Burgess accepted the cake on behalf of his comrades, and it is to be the central figure at a function in the camp either to-day or to morrow. Cheers were given for the donor and boys in the camp. The sale of the cake realised the respectable sum ot £9 15s, At the conclusion of the dance the girls packed up the surplus edibles and presented them to the soldier boys, who carried them back to camp to share with their comrades. On the whole, the function was a decided social and financial success. The Young Men’s Club Committee desire to tender their sincere thanks to all those who so kindly assisted their effort last night.
