The Arbitration Court will, sit in Palmerston North, commencing on Thursday, August sth, to hear the dispute between the Manawatu Flaxmill Employees’ Union and the. employers, and to make an award governing the hemp industry, to take the place of the one at present in force. Mr A. E. Dunn on Wednesday received a post card from his brother George, who is a member of the New' Zealand Main Expeditionary Force. It was written from the Firs! Australian General Hospital in Hellpolls, where the writer had been for a period of seven weeks. He states that he had a narrow squeak of losing his leg, but was at the time of writing progressing very well, and hoped to rejoin his regiment in about a fortnight from then. The secretary of the local Horticultural Society has received a letter from Messrs Thos. Horton Ltd., offering half a dozen rose trees to be donated to any class the committee think fit, and Mr Wuighlon, the well-known Palmerston nurseryman, has donated twenty shillings’ worth of plants (own selection, suitable for flower garden), as a points prize for the next Autumn Show. Messrs Barraud and Abraham (per Mrs Renton), have promised 10s worth of seeds for each of the three shows. The following is a synopsis of the lecture to be given by Mr T. W. Poynton, S.M., in the Masonic Hall next Thursday night, under the auspices of the local State School Committee Sound waves and musical tones; analogy between sound and light; extraordinary nature of ether; light, heat and electricity; X-rays and wireless telegraphy; other forces not yet controlled but known to exist; nerve force; homing instinct of animals; telepathy; occult phenomena ; probable future discoveries. All members of the Girls’ Guild are requested to attend Tuesday night’s meeting, when important business is to be discussed. A meeting of the gas committee was heid in the Council Chambers yesterday morning. Present The Mayor and Crs Coley, Henderson and McColl, and the gas manager. The Mayor explained that the slight misunderstanding that had existed between the gas manager and the Town Clerk had been satisfactorily settled, and that the gas manager would like permission to withdraw his two last reports. This was accordingly granted. The gas manager’s report making suggestions as to a revised scale ot charges for gas was discussed, and is to be recommended for adoption at the next Council meeting. Crs Henderson and McColl gave a report as to the amount of gas consumed for the past two periods of lighting in the lamps at Dr. Mandl’s and T. Riturner's corners. The gas manager was directed to prepare a return showing the upkeep of the street lamps.
