Tiik annual meeting of the New Zealand Teachers’ Institute was held in Wellington last week, and the report of the proceedings as published in the press reminds one more of the doings of a tradesunion gathering than a body of experts assembled to discuss vital questions concerning the educational welfare of the future men and women of the Dominion. Roaves and fishes appeared to be the one consideration on the minds of the delegates —how much can we get for as little effort as possible. Our Feilding contemporary, in commenting on the conference, says : “When one reads about a conference of members of the profession whose occupation is entirely concerned with education or educational methods, it is natural to suppose that some lime would be devoted to methods of self-improvement, of attaining a higher standard, and of the instruction it is their special duty to impart. There can be no question but that trained minds should be fitter to deal with the uplifting of the rising generation than those who have not devoted their lives to matters of the kind, and that while inexperienced folk are only experimenting and blindly groping tor light, the human being specially fitted for the task should be able to judge more quickly and think out more thoroughly the possible developments fraught with so much importance to the nation/’
