FOXTON: THE PORT.

POOR RAILWAY SKRVICK. Referring lo the progress of Foxton, from the early clays lo the present lime, in an article appearing in last Wednesday’s special edition of the livening Post (portion of which was published in our Saturday’s issue), reference is made to the poor railway service under which Foxton labours, The paragraph is as follows: ‘•The only thing she deplores is her treatment by the Railway Department, both in the matter of its policy regarding her wharf, and the service it has given her with the outside world. Two motor services, over excellent roads, connect the town with the Main Trunk railway at Devin (twelve miles), and Shannon (eight miles), but the railway service to Palmerston is the main outlet for the town. This service is a source of perpetual grumbling amongst the townspeople and those outsiders

who use it to do business with Foxton. The time table is inconvenient, and though the distance is only twenty five miles, it is difficult to fit in a business day from either end and return home the same night. It alters on almost each day of the week, and has been termed a 'Chinese puzzle.’ [This sentence Is incorrect, the only alterations occurring in Saturday’s evening train (arriving Foxton 9-30 p.m.), and Monday’s morning trains (departing 7 a.m,, and arriving 10,30 a.m.).J Discontent is also rife at the poor class of passenger accommodation provided, and the speed of the trains. The people consider that the time has come when these things might well be attended to.
