The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, June 24, 1915. HAVE YOU MADE A SACRIFICE?
The method of raising money for the various patriotic funds is exercising the minds of many people. The opinion is expressed that wholesale raffles is fostering the gambling spirit which already has a great hold on a large section of the public of the Dominion, and that straight-out giving for such objects is the most desirable form of sharing our responsibility and making a sacrifice in this life and death struggle in which the Empire in engaged. We regret to state, however, that if it were left to voluntary giving alone the response would be disappointing, for thousands of people to whom the gambling factor appeals would not contribute a tenth of what they are now doing. The great object for which money and sacrifice are required is to them very vague. How many people in this progressive country have yet made a genuine sacrifice, outside those who have offered their lives ? Thousands of people in this Dominion are more prosperous today as a result of the war, and it is open to question whether they have even given of their increase. Some sordid and mercenary souls will not be stirred until they are compelled to disgorge per medium of a war tax. The peasantry of our hated enemy put them to shame in voluntary giving. Reader, what genuine sacrifice have you yet made in the cause for which our glorious Empire is pouring out its life blood to-day ? Do you realise the Empire’s need ? Remember, you are a unit of the British Empire, and your duty is clear.
