LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A meeting of the Moutoa Drainage Board will be held on Thursday next, 24th Inst., at 7.43 p.m. Business: Confirmation of rates, and general. Wairarapa intends to raise £40,000 for the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund. The district favours a National Fund, and failing that, a Provincial Fund. Wairarapa is prepared to help the wounded men from less wealthy parts of New Zealand. At Fullers’ Pictures on Saturday night the balance of gifts on hand belonging to the Ladies’ Guild and Belgian Fund were auctioned. The Fullers management is entitled to the thanks of the public for allowing their building to be used for this purpose, thus breaking into their programme. We are asked to inform the public that no more auction sales will be held for the present. At Fullers’ Pictures on Saturday night, the balance of gifts held by the various committees were auctioned by Mr Hornblow. The Shetland pony, won by Mr O. Robinson, was “knocked down” to Mr Richard A. Spelrs for £7 10s (Ladies’ Guild); Mr Perreau’s cake was bought by the following : Mr Wesche 12s, do 10s, Ludvigsen Bs, Wesche 7s, do 6s, Longquist ss, finally bought by Mr W. Smith (Moutoa) for £1 2s. Mr Stiles’ rug was purchased by Dr Mandl for two guineas, and re-sold on behalf of the Wounded Soldiers’ Fund to Mr C. Simmons for £1 Bs. Tea cosy, Mr Pod-* more 10s 6d. Such distorted utterances are calculated to upset those who have relatives at the trout and should not be taken seriously. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Education Board the Department again refused to make any grants for additions to, renovations of, or erection of residences. The Hoard decided to protest against such treatment of teachers, especially as in some cases the existing conditions were disgraceful. The Rev. I. A. McKenzie, of Shannon, having received three months’ leave of absence In order to take up the Presbyterian chaplaincy work at Trentham camp, his pulpit is being supplied in the meantime by neighbouring ministers. The Rev. Jas. M. Thomson, m.a., will act as Moderator of the charge. Leave of absence was granted by the Wanganui Education Board to 14 teachers for illness and to eight to go to the front. The question ol the scarcity of male teachers is beginning to assume a serious aspect, and many of the schools will soon be staffed almost entirely with women assistants. The Remuera, which arrived at Wellington from London last week brought 25 first saloon, 31 second, and 117 assisted immigrants. The latter are coming out to join relatives, The Corinthic, due at Wellington about July 17 from London, is bringing 250 passengers, of whom 140 are assisted immigrants, including 50 domestic servants, The committee set up at the last Council meeting (The Mayor and Crs Henderson, Freeman and Whibley) to go into details in connection with the proposed purchase of a horse and rubbish cart met last night. After full discussion it was decided that in the opinion of the Committee the time is inopportune to purchase a horse and cart for this purpose. The “Within the Law” Company paid a return visit to Foxton last night and in consequence of the very excellent entertainment provided on their previous visit, were greeted by a large audience. The “bill of fare” on this occasion was tue Irish comedy - drama, ‘The Rosary,” of which the members of the company gave a first-class interpretation, the audience showing their appreciation in no uncertain way.

It was Muted at a meeting of Feilding’s Patriotic Committee last week, by one speaker, that the farmers in that locality were not contributing to the funds in proportion to the increased prices received on stock, etc., during the war. It was decided to get the farmers together and throw out a challenge to them. The public in the various centres are beginning to find out that with few exceptions the wage earners are contributing the bulk of the money to the various funds. At Fullers’ Pictures on Saturday night the drawing took place for the Shetland pony. The lucky ticket was drawn by Mr O. Robinson, who generously put the pony up for sale on behalf of the Ladies’ Guild Wounded Soldiers' Fund. It was “knocked down” to Mr Richard Speirs for £7 ros, The sale of tickets realised and this 1 added to £7 ros brought the total to 1 os. Altogether the pony has realised £73 ros. The Ladies Guild desire to thank all who assisted in connection with the raffle and to particularly thank Mr C, F. Johnston, without whose efforts the affair could not have been so successful.
