The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, June 12, 1915. A SUGGESTION.
The Eoxton public, up to the present, has contributed very generously to the various funds which have beeu inaugurated for the relief of the poor of Great Britain and Belgium, Patriotic Fund, etc. The contributions, on a population basis, compares very favourably with those of other towns throughout the Dominion. It is apparent, however, that much more will have to be done in the near future and the people will be called upon to make greater sacrifices than hitherto. For the purpose of putting things on a systematic footing we would suggest that the Mayor convene a public meeting for the purpose of electing an executive committee repre sentative of the whole community —consisting of men and women, whose duty it will be to discuss and initiate all public efforts for the purpose of raising and disposing of funds. All moneys collected to be vested in two trustees and paid out as the committee decide. If this suggestion Is adopted the public, both local and general, will know to a penny piece how much is raised and for what purpose it is applied. The setting up of such committee would not conflict with the domestic arrangements of organisations now in existence, but could assist and advise them and prevent any over lapping. The whole thing would become a united local organisation and put Foxton’s operations on a concrete foundation. We give the suggestion for what it is worth and believe it will meet with the approval of the public.
