BAY OF ISLANDS SEAT.

ELECTION TO-DAY. To-day the by-election for the Bay of Islands seat takes place. The candidates are : in the Government interests, Mr William Stewart, oi Kawakawa ; and for the Opposition, Mr George G. Menzies, of Rawene. Interest in the election has not been particularly keen outside the immediate locality concerned, and even there, from accounts that have come to hand, the contest would not have waged as strenuously as it has were it not for the party fight that has been carried on by outside representatives of each side. The Ministerial Party, which held the seat with Mr Vernon Reed, seem to exhibit no lack of confidence in its ability to retain it. On the other band, the Opposition, though not so sanguine, puts forward the statement that the seat has been Liberal for twenty years ; and good reports have been circulated oi excellent results from the vigorous campaigning of the last few weeks. Outside the immediate Party circles, however, the impression generally is that Mr Stewart will be returned. The electorate is. roughly speaking, 150 miles long, from the North Cape to the Wairau Falls.
