MOUTOA NOTES.
(Own Correspondent), The flax cutters of Whitaunui met on Thursday evening last to bid farwell to one ot their mates, Mr J. McCarthy, who has joined the reinforcements. After the toast of the “King, Army and Navy” had been honoured, Mr A. McLeod, who occupied the chair, presented Mr McCarthy with a wristlet watch. In the course of a few well-chosen remarks the chairman said if McCarthy behaved himself and fought as well as he worked bis mates at Whitau nui would have no need to be ashamed of him as a soldier. In responding, Mr McCarthy thanked them all for their good wishes and hoped that he and his brother soldiers would be a few of many who would make the Kaiser regret that he had ordered his German soldiers to walk over General French’s little army. Almost every man of the forty present said or did something towards the entertainment. After the toasts of the “Maori Contingent,” “The Veterans,” “The Ladies,” and “The Press,” had been honoured the singing of “Auld Lang Syne,” brought a historical evening for Whitaunui to a close.
