THE COMING CARNIVAL.

A further meeting of the Carnival and Ball Committee was held in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. The Mayor presided. Progress was reported, and from the statements made everything points to a most successful gathering. The sweets stall will be iu charge of Mesdames Harvey and boyes and the Misses Robinson. The flower and produce stall will be in charge of Mesdames A, S. Easton and W. Signal. This department will be particularly attractive. Mrs Easton’s love of horticulture is a by-word, and as a prize winner at local Shows she has won considerable fame. That being the case, it naturally follows that the flower stall will be out to do record business, and patrons will receive full value for purchases. It has been decided to ask Messrs Abraham and Williams to auction the pony donated by the Henry Barber estate, at their Palmerston yards. Mr Geo. Barber’s gift heifer will be offered for sale at the fair, and failing a fair price, will be withdrawn and auctioned at the Himatangi yards. The Ball Committee have engaged the services of Mr Small, of Palmerston N., to supply seductive music for the ball. Mrs Jenks appeals for refreshments for the lea rooms on the day of the fair. By the way, don’t forget this department at the Fair. Persons willing to give refreshments will please leave them at tha hall on Thursday morning. Devotees of my Lady Nicotine may have all their wants supplied at the tobacco stall. The stall will be in charge of Misses Cook and Edwards. The jumble stall will supply anything from a needle to an anchor. Citizens who have anything to give for this stall will please communicate with the secretary. Gifts of any description —books, magazines, etc.—will be thankfully received. Please send along anything you have no use for, and which can be turned into cash for the Belgian Fund. All gifts may be left with Mr Smith at the Town Hall. The side shows ore numerous and various, and include an ingenious racecourse, where all the excitement of the sport of kings will be provided. Aunt Sally will challenge the boys and girls to knock the pipe out of her mouth. Kaiser Bill will defy patriotic Britons to knock his elusive head oft. Golden moments will afford patrons the opportunity to get rich quick. Then there is the ring table, hoop-la, dart board, skittles ' and quoits. % Guessing competitions are now open to the public, and include ; Bottle of beans (prize, tin of tea), at Mr Kelly’s store; eyelets, guessing for a pair of evening shoes, at Mr Betty’s ; buttons, for suit of clothes or lady’s costume, at Mr Osborne’s ; candle burning, at Mesdames Henderson and Cunnlnghame’s ; length of film, for a three month’s ticket at Fuller’s, etc., etc. * * * The Patriotic Minstrels will keep the audience amused with their songs, choruses and jokes. Every song will have a chorus; The company consists of Mesdames Ralne, Freeman, Jenks, Misses Signal (2) and King, Messrs Ballard, H. Signal, P. Robinson, G. Barber, A, Jenks, Aitken and Hornblow. Mr Alt, Jenks is musical conductor, Mr P. Robinson “tambo,” Mr Bullard “bones,” and Mr Hornblow interlocutor. Miss A. Jenks is the accompanist, assisted by Mr Baughen (cornet). Special items will be given by Mr Knewstub “clog dance” and Miss Nicholls will sing during the evening. Prior to the minstrel entertainment, the school drill squads under Mr Gabites will give an exhibition. This item will commence at 7.30 sharp and the minstrel entertainment will come at 7.40, Probably the most novel feature of the carnival will be a court sitting, to be presided over by the Mayor as judge. Special constables will place under arrest any citizen who iu any way behaves too well and punishments will be meted out to fit the “crimes.” Mr Collins’ orchestra will provide a musical programme. The Band has kindly consented to stir up inhabitants on both carnival nights. The following have donated gifts to the Fair in addition to those already acknowledged : Mrs Parkes books, Mr A. O. Better lour pairs girls shoes value £ 2, Mr J, Golder gold brooch value 17s 6d, Chung Wah vegetables value 153, J. M. Barr quilt value £1 17s 6d, G. H. Stiles value £1 is. The final meeting of the committee will be held in the Town Hall on Tuesday afternoon next at 3 o’clock.
