SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the local State school committee was held on Thursday night. Present • Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Rev. W. Raine, Betty, Chrystall, Hussey and Woods. Apologies were received from Messrs Perreau and Henderson. On the motion of Messrs Betty and Hussey it was decided that the matter of joining the School Committees Association be held over until the Boundaries Commission had defined the new district. On the motion of Messrs Woods and Chrystall, it was resolved that the Borough Council be asked to forego the sanitation charge. The headteacher reported that the average attendances for the last four weeks were : 364.9, 364.1, 363.3. 360.8 ; the averages for the whole period was 363.2 out of an average roll number 0! 397 ; the rresent roll number is 399. A programme of songs, recitations, etc., Is to be carried out on Empire Day, commencing at 1.30 p.m. and the co-operation of the committee was solicited in connection therewith. Two or three squads are to be sent to compete in the physical drill competitions at the Palmerston Dairy Show and it was suggested that the school close on that day, also that the Chairman’s suggestion that the committee contribute towards the travelling expenses be favourably considered. Mr Stewart inspected the school on the 7th inst. On the motion of Messrs Hussey and Betty, it was decided to pay halt cost ol the squads travelling expenses, that the school be not closed and that the Chairman and Secretary and Mr Chrystall interview the headteacher on the matter. Repairs to the drum were lelt in the hands of Mr Betty. Several accounts were passed for payment. The Chairman’s action in arranging a lecture and demonstration by Miss Carter to the elder girls was endorsed. Mr Chrystall reported on behalf of the visiting committee and suggested top-dressing portion of the tenuis court and the necessity for replacing broken skylight. On the motion of Messrs Raine and Woods, Mr Chrystall was instructed to interview Messrs Newth and Jackson re work on the tennis court with power to act provided the cost did not exceed The Chairmau and Mr Henderson were appointed visitors for the month. The committee expressed their Intention to be present at the school on Monday afternoon next in connection with Empire Day celebrations.
