VARIETY FAIR AND BALL.

COMMITTEE MEETING, A meeting of the executive committee of the above was held in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. The Mayor (Mr Alf. Fraser) presided. It was decided to open the Fair from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 3rd, to which an admission charge of 6d will be made. A letter was read from Mr Jackson suggesting drill displays and an essay competition to be done by children at school and that Mr Aitken would slug the revised version of “The Absentminded Beggar.” Mr Jackson’s suggestions were adopted and it was decided that an entry iee of 3d be charged for the essay competP tion and that prizes of 53 and 2s 6d be awarded. (The prizes were awarded by Messrs G. 0. Barber and Henderson.) It was decided that Mr Jackson arrange drill displays both afternoon and evening and that the competitions committee interview him re the children’s display. The secretary reported that the flower stall would be uuder the control of Mesdames A. S. Hasten and W. Signal. A letter from Mr Eumbye re music for the dance was referred to the dance committee. The secretary reported that Mr S. B. Collins had offered to provide a small orchestra for the Variety Fair. Resolved that the matter of best dressed doll competition be lelt in the hands of competitions committee. Resolved that the secretary write Mr Sykes asking if the New Plymouth Society would grant the loan of various comic heads for procession purposes. Mr G. O. Barber reported on behalf of the competitions committee that Mr A. R. Osborne had promised a suit of clothes or lady’s costume for guessing competition, which Mr Kelly would supervise. The N.Z. Candle Co. had been asked to provide a large caudle for competition purposes aud that Mr Betty had promised to conduct a guessing competition. That Mr Perreau had donated a cake for a nail-driving competition. The Rev. Raiue reported that Mrs Hillman had agreed to dress a doll and run a name-guessing competition in connection with same, and that the name of the doll had been deposited with the Mayor. Several sheep for competition and auction had been promised. Mr Smith reported that the ball tickets were to hand and Messrs Smith and Barber agreed to arrange for disposal of same. The following names, subject to their consent, were added to the ball committee : Messrs J. M. Kelly, C. A. Preston, C. Simmons, A. H. Boyes, B. Hooker, K. Furrie and. T. G. White. It was resolved to hold the next meeting on Monday next, 24th inst., at 3 p-m.
