THE DARDANELLES.
Atuhns, May 16. Messages from a special correspondent give details of the Hattie of Gallipoli. He says the Australians’ heroism was stupefying and unique in the history of modern war. Their losses were solely due to their dash. On Friday there was a deserate six hours’ fight. Tire Allies dislodged the Turks from the heights of Krithia and enlhu-nched themselves therein. The heavy fighting on the hills behind Kilid Hahr and Maidos continues, the Allies pushing the Turks steadily back, The preparations at Tenedos and Eeinuos to reinforce the Allies ate described as colossal. London, May 16. Renter’s Dardanelles correspondent stales that attcr the landing at the western end of Gallipoli there were several Turkish night attacks, the most important whereof was cn the Ist May, from r 0.30 p.m. to dawn. It was a wonderful starry night, with a ini! moon. Seaward were the clusters of lights on the transports, and shoreward the gnus and howitzers of the British, French, and Turks flashed the whole night along. The rifle fire was incessant, but the deeper boom of the warships’ gnus rose over all. Star-shells, lime after time, lit up the scene. The Turks fought stubbornly, and repeatedly reached the Allies’ lines, but they suffered terribly from the bayonet. Many penetrated behind the lines and were killed or captured. At daybreak the Turks had probably lost 3000 men, The Allies’ losses were slight. Fresh attacks were made on several succeeding nights. They were less prolonged and determined, and all were ineffective. The Daily Mail’s Athens cor-, respondent says that advices from Constantinople report that 50,000 wounded from the Dardanelles have arrived. Thnkdos, May 16. The Goeben, in attempting to shell the Australians on the beach at Gaba Tepe, was twice nearly bit by the Lord Nelson. In a few minutes she hurriedly steamed off.
