Sir James Carroll was a visitor to Foxton on Tuesday. The price of butter in Dunedin has advanced a penny a pound, the retail price now being is yd per lb. Mr C. E. Danlell, of Masterton, was yesterday elected chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, At the Supreme Court Christchurch yesterday, William George Maslin, charged with indecent exposure, was acquitted. The Shannon and Moutoa Hockey Clubs have decided to combine this year and will take part in the Horowhenua Hockey Association’s competition under the name of United. Rates in the Manawatu county have been struck as follows: Sandon, Mount Stewart, Waitohi, Carnarvon, and Kawakawa ridings, Jsd in the £i ; Rongotea, : Awahou, id. A public meeting will be held in the Masonic Hall on Tuesday evening next at 8 o’clock, for the purpose of forming a miniature rifle club. All interested are cordially invited to be present. Polling for the election of the Council of Education, set up under the Act of last session, closed on Monday. The Returning officer (Mr F. K, de Castro, Wellington) has however, to allow eight days for the receipt of posted papers, and the counting will therefore not take place until after 5 p.m. on the i Sth inst. There was a large audience at the Royal on Saturday night when an excellent programme was submitted and much appreciated, The star features were two fine productions, namely, “The Riddle of the Green Umbrella,” and “The Forest Dwellers,” and were of a highly interesting nature. The supporting films were of a high standard. At Monday night’s Council meeting, Cr Bryant drew attention to the position of the lamp post at the corner of Jenks and Russell Street, which he considered was a source of danger. —It was decided on the motion of Cr Bryant, seconded by Cr Thompson, that the lamp be shifted to a safer position, if approved by the gas works Committee. The local Ladies Belgian Sewing Guild acknowledge with thanks the receipt of a further £6 from the employees ot the Poplar mill. As it is desirous that clothing for the Belgians should be sent forward at the earliest possible date residents who have any ready are requested to send it along to the guild as soon as possible. As a result of the monthly benefit picture entertainment which was held in the Royal on Monday evening the funds of the local Ladles Belgian Sewing Guild benefitted to the extent of £B. This amount will be devoted to the providing of comforts for the New Zealand wounded. The guild wish to announce that in the future tickets sold will bear the date of the entertainment for which they are available and can only be used on that date. A lost gold cable bangle is advertised for. Reward. The Commissioner of Taxes notifies that returns under the Land and Income Assessment Act must be forwarded on or before June 2nd. The war news to day discloses tremendous activity of the fiercest description on the Western front, where the Allies are making splendid progress, maintaining all important gains, checking despe rate counter-attacks, and inflicting heavy losses on the Germans. “1 am not going to be a party to any kid glove business in dealing with short-weight bread cases at a time like this, when the price is so high and there is so much poverty about.” Such was the declaration of Mr F. V. Fraser, S.M., at Auckland yesterday, when bakers were before him on charges of having sold short-weight bread. The maximum fine of was imposed in each case. Councillor Veuu moved at Saturday’s meeting of the Horowhenua County Council that the council congratulate the Raugilikel County Council upou the patriotic resolution whereby they affirmed that any war tax should fall upon the wealthy land-owners, and those in receipt of large incomes, and uot upou the dally wage earner, and that a copy of the resolution be sent to the chairraau of the Rangitikei County Council. Councillor Venn said that the Rangitikei was a wealthy Council, and the resolution was a credit to it. The resolution was seconded by Councillor Stephenson and carried.
At Monday night’s Council meeting correspondence was read from the Surveyor-General In connection with the encroachment of sections on Park Stret, confirming previous surveys made by engineers employed by the Council which disclosed the fact that the fence on the east side of Park Street between Thynne and Robinson Streets encroached on the road to the extent of 18 inches. —The Mayor said that the Council at a previous meeting decided that the fences on this street should be placed on the correct line, but a dispute arose with Mr Rimmer as to which was the correct boundary. The letter from the Surveyor-General confirmed the Council’s previous survey, and it was decided on the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, that Mr Rimmer and Mr J. A. Perreau, now that the question of fence line has been definitely decided, be requested to place their fences on the proper line within one month. In these days of “ high ” living, as applied to price and not quality, a letter which was read at the Borough Council meeting on Monday evening will interest residents in the district. The Clerk, Devonport Borough Council, forwarded the following resolution which had been carried by his Council: “That the Government be strongly urged to remove the restrictions governing the Fishing Industry to enable fish being purchased at a reasonable price.” The Council the writer stated, was of the opinion that the present method of procuring fish was obsolete and inadequate, and consequently approved ot trawling for same. In this way the cost of catching fish could be reduced considerably. The price of fish being at the present time prohibitive, the Council asked for support in the matter. —The Mayor said he would have to confess his ignorance of the Fishing Regulations, and considered ic would be better to hold the matter over until next meeting, rather than support or oppose something they knew nothing about.
