CORRESPONDENCE.
vTothe Editorh Six. I should like to know whether the present Council intends to allow the increase of to remain on lire Town Clerk’s salary. He received this extra payment tor looking after the picture enterprise and during the period a rise in salary was made to his assistant. After the hall and pictures were transferred to a private concern the Clerk was allowed to retain the ,430, which was transferred to different accounts. And I would also like to ask who re-allocated the Z3O, because I am informed that it was all cut and dried before the meeting and sprung on to Councillors. I think sir, we are paying too much for clerical work and this opinion is shared by many others, and in justice to tho'-'e people who pay the rates, the Council should investigate the matter and have the courage to say whether or not the Clerk is entitled to the increase. Some people are very generous in paying away other people’s money, but they are not so liberal when it touches their own pocket. And, as one who contributes to the rates, I object to the ,£3O increase to the Clerk.—Yours etc., Ratepayer .
