BELGIAN RELIEF FUND.

VARIETY FAIR AND FANCY DRESS BATE.

A TWO NIGHTS ENTERTAINMENT.

A number of local citizens met yesterday afternoon at the invitation of Mr W. Smith, local manager for Messrs Fullers’ Ltd., to discuss a proposal to raise further funds for the Belgian relief. The Mayor (Alf. Fraser, Esq.) was voted to the chair and there were present: Messrs Rev. Win. Raiue, W. Smith, Horublow, Kirkly,'Claris, G. O. Barber, Bullard, Betty and A. J. Kellow. The Mayor called upon Mr Smith to outline the object of the meeting. Mr Smith said his firm wished to promote, with the assistance of a local committee, a local function on a big scale for the object above named. The ball would be placed at the disposal of the committee for two nights free of charge and the whole staff had voluntarily offered their services gratuitously. He suggested that the effort take the form of a grand variety fair the fust night and a fancy dress and poster ball the second night. He then outlined the details of the scheme. After discussion and on the Mayor’s suggestion the o*bject of the effo;t was restricted to the Belgian Fund. On the motion of Messrs Barber and Claris, Messrs Fullers’ offer was accepted and a grand variety fair and fancy dress ball on the lines suggested was adopted, all present with power to add to their number being a committee to carry out same. It was lesolved that the proceeds be handed to the Borough Council for transmission to the Minister of Internal Affairs. The dates were fixed tor June 3rd and 4th. The following were elected an executive; The Mayor (convenor and chairman), Rev. W. Kaine, Messrs Hornblow, Smith and Kellow ; treasurer, Rev. W. Raiue ; secretary, Mr A. J. Kellow. The following sub-committees were appointed with power to add : Competitions, Messrs G. O. Barber (convenor), Kirkiy, J. Ross and Claris; side shows and games, Messrs Raiue (convenor), W. H. Barber, Betty and Hornblow ; rattles, bran tub, etc., Mr A. J. Kellow ; school childrens’ competitions and essays, Messrs Jackson and Gabites; comic sketch minstrels, etc., Messrs D. Knewslubb and Smith ; shooting, Mr Barnard : miniature racecourse, Mr P. Robinson ; auctioneer, Mr Hornblow. Resolved that the admission to the fair be, adults is, children under 12 years half price. Resolved that the Borough Baud be asked to assist. Advertising and printing was left in the hands of Mr Smith. It was decided to allot the following prizes for the fancy dress ball: Best lady’s fancy dress, do gentleman’s, do lady’s poster dress, do gentleman’s. Admission to ball, double ticket ss, single 2S 6d, onlookers is. The following M’s.C. were appointed : The Mayor and Messrs Kellow, G, O. Barber and M. E. Perteau. Arrangements re music were left in the hands of the M'sC. It was decided that the Mayor convene a meeting of iadies willing to assist ou Tuesday afternoon, 10th Inst., at 3 o’clock iu the Mayor’s room Council Chambers. The following donations were offered at the meeting ; Mr G. 0. Barber one heifer, the Mayor one guinea, A. J. Kellow one guinea, J. K. Hornblow 10s 6d, W. E. Bullard ios 6J, W. Smith 10s 6d. Contributions of refreshments for the hall were also promised. A vote ot thanks was passed to Messrs Fullers’ Ltd. for their generous offer and proffered assistance. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded a very enthusiastic meeting.
