“IN COMMITTEE.”
MAYOR PREFERS OPEN COUNCIL.
Dining the course ol his remarks at the Mayoral installation yesterday, Mr Fraser said he didn’t believe in too much Council business being done in committee. The Mayor and Councillors were only the representatives of the public, and the business they transacted was puplic business, and the electors had, a right to know what was being done. Of course some matters had of necessity, to be conducted in committee, but for the future he did not intend taking business in committee unless the nature of same made it absolutely ueccessary. In any case any matters that required to be dealt with iu committee would be held over until the end of the meeting, so that if any members of the public were present—and he hoped that the public would take an interest in borough affairs and attend the meetings—■ they would not have to leave until the whole of the general business was completed. The attendance of the public at Council meetings was a good thing as it showed that they were taking am interest iu the affairs of the borough, and he expressed the hope that in the future a good attendance of the public would be in evidence at the meetings.
