NEWS AND NOTES.
What was considered to be rather a curiosity in the way of patriotism was witnessed in Dunedin during the past week. A vehicle passed along a main thoroughfare decorated with two waving British ensigns, which apparently served the purpose of an "introductory” advertisement for the man in charge, who was disposing of sewing machines of German mamifac.ture. Mr Stibbs, of King and Slibbs, has shown specimens of blackberry that have been treated with the blight cute to the Eltham Argus. One stem of the blackberry shows signs where the blight has just commenced to attack it, the other stem is a specimen of the finished article, and is withered and dry as a chip. All that is necessary is to plant an infected blackberry plant in a blackberry area and the disease immediately begins to spread. Good work in thus eradicating the blackberry is being done in Inglewood and Midhirst districts.
Lord Kitchener, according to a story told by Harold Begbie, was told one day (belote the war) by Mr Lloyd George that recruiting in Wales would he far quicker if the men could serve under a Welsh general. " But where is your Welsh general?” demanded Kitchener. "We had better discuss that with Colonel Owen Thomas, who has come with me, and is now in your waiting-room.” Kitchener gave orders to have the visitors admitted. As soon as be saw him he said, " you were iu South Africa?” "Yes. sir,” replied the colonel. “ You’re now now brigadier-general, commanding the Welsh army; you’d better go and get to work at once.”
Mr Wm. Lockhart, plays Edward Gilder in “Within the Law,” holds the unique record of playing only two parts during seven years continuous touring in the English provinces. He appeared as Father Favius in the “Sign of the Cross” for four years, and as the messenger in the “Message from Mars” for two years.
