The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, April 24, 1915. FACING THE MUSIC.
Eight of the twelve candidates for seats on the Council accepted Cr Chrystall’s invitation to address the electors in the Town Hall last night. On the whole they did well, although there was a marked evidence of “ stage nervousness.” To those unaccustomed to public speaking, it is a trying ordeal and many a useful public man would rather endure the physical torture of a dental operation than deliver a public speech. The things one wants to say disappear from the mind and
confusion reigns supreme. One or two good points, as set out elsewhere, were made by several of the speakers but brevity characterised most of the utterances. There are several subjects of municipal importance upon which the candidates could have discoursed interestingly when once the initial attempt is over and we venture to say if these same men faced the footlights again they would wax quite eloquent. Meetings such as that held last night are calculated to do much good and there is no reason why Councillors should not meet the public and discuss matters of major importance. It would compel a closer study of subjects of vital importance to boxlou’s future prosperity and create a public enthusiasm not otherwise aroused. The speakers are to be congratulated upon their public appearance and the interest they have aroused and now that they have broken the ice we hope to hear them again. They deserve public recognition at the poll next Wednesday.
