W. DUERKOP FINED

The final stage of the Duerkop case was reached yesterday, when his Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) fined accused ,£IOO, in default three months’ imprisonment, for trading with the enemy. Originally there were five charges against accused (whose full name is Wilhelm Magnus Duerkop), and the offences were alleged to have taken place betweed 17th September and 28th October, 1914. When the case was heard before a jury a verdict of guilty was returned on four counts, while the finding on the fifth count was also tantamount to a verdict of guilty. The Appeal Court reviewed the jury’s verdict and found that Duerkop was guilty on four inictments and not guilty on the fifth.
