The Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, April 22, 1915. COMING MUNICIPAL ELECTION.

Bktwkek now and Wednesday next the electors of Foxton will have to make up their minds as to the most suitable of the candidates offering to represent them in the capacity of Mayor and Councillors. For the Mayoralty there are two candidates offering, viz,, Cr Chrystall and Mr Alf, Fraser. Both gentlemen are well-known and highly esteemed, and either would occupy the civic chair with dignity and credit and in this respect the electors are to be congratulated upon having a call on the services of such estimable citizens. It is a case of “how happy we could be with either.” It is regrettable, however, that the services of the rejected candidate will be lost to the Council. The qualifications of the candidates are so well-known to electors that it is unnecessary to recapitulate anything we have previously said in this respect. To-morrow evening in the Town Hall Cr Chrystall will deal with bis candidature and review the work of the Council’s past operations. It is not Mr Fraser’s intention to take the public platform, but he sets forth his views as per advertisement.

For the Council there are twelve nominations lor the nine seals on the Council, including six of the present Council, viz., Crs. Coley, Freeman, Henderson, Kempster, Read and Whibley. The other candidates constitute new blood and we believe, without exception, are making their first bid lor public life. We are pleased to notice among the list two of our young men who have expressed a willingness to take up their share of the responsibilities of municipal life, in the persons of Messrs C. Simmons and /as. W. Stevenson. The former is a well-known local business man who has been actively connected with the shops association, and the latter, while not tso well-known, has been a resident of Foxton tor the past nine years and occupies a responsible position in the engineering department of Messrs Levin and Co’s, local stores. These young townsmen deserve encouragement and we hope the example they have set will in the future stimulate other young men to olTer for the higher duties of citizenship. The sitting Councillors are too well-known to need comment and there is no reason to doubt that the electors have a proper appreciation of their worth and past services. Messrs McColl and Bryant are men of ripe business experience and if they can bring the same foresight and acumen to bear in civic matters as is evidenced in their business life, the borough will not suffer by their election. Mr Gardes is one of our local hotel proprietors and a short time since was an employee ot the Council, and is a man of abundant energy, The last on the list of candidates, but whom we trust will not be last on polling day, is Mr R. J. Thompson, a local dairy farmer and a man of sterling character. Our acquaintance with Mr Thompson is in connection with school committee affairs and a more enthusiastic and devoted committeeman in the cause of education it would be difficult to find. Judging him on these hues we can

strongly recommend him to the burgesses on polling day. We suggest that electors in making their choice from the above, select these men whom they would be prepared to entrust with the administration of their own private affairs. If electors follow th is rule they will have no reason to be dissatisfied in the discharge of their responsibility at the ballot box.
