THE LATE MRS SMITH.
The remains of the late Mrs J. A. Smith, were interred in the Foxton Cemetery on Sunday last. In St. Mary’s Church, during the morning service, the Rev. Father Morris paid a fine tribute to the Christian characbler and life of the deceased. Her many acts of charity were accomplished without ostentation. She was the devoted helpmeet of her husband, and bore the hardships of pioneering with cheerfulness, and the family will ever cherish the memory of an affectionate mother. It is thirtyfive years ago, then newly wedded, that the deceased and her husband settled at Moutoa, and by their industry converted rough country into a beautiful homestead. Three and a half years ago, on account of the late Mrs Smith’s failing health, the parents, with their eldest daughter, took up their residence in Foxion. During the past year the deceased has been practically bedridden, being devotedly nursed the while by her daughter. When the news of her demise became known, messages ot sympathy were received from all parts of the Dominion testifying to the esteem in which she was held by a large circle of friends.
The casket was carried from tbe house to the church nearby, by the following members of the St. Vincent de Fan! Society : Messrs S. Dudsou, R. Hynes, Hurley and Desmond. The cortege was followed to the cemetery by a large number of townspeople and residents ot the district, who thus paid the last tribute of respect to the memory of a sterling settler.
