RAILWAY PORTER’S SENSE OF DUTY.

Noticing a certain happening on his station platform recently (states the New Zealand Officers’ Advocate), a stalionmaster not one hundred miles from Auckland wrote to the member of his staff as follows 1 . “ Porter A.B. —Rule 16.—1 tis alleged that you accepted a tip of one shilling from a passenger by No train to day. Your early report, please.—C.D., Stalionmaster.’’ The porter’s reply was duly supplied, and read as under; “Sir,—ln answer to above, I b cr tate the allegation is untrue, but I have such a strong determination for duty, and to obey the rule, I lost it, though another member of the staff not having such a strong sense of duty, who came along and the temptation was too much for him. I will take note this do not happen again. It it should come under your notice that it do happen and I miss shillings in this way I trust you will deal with me very harshly.”
