H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND.
A Hawke’s Bay resident, at present in London, writing to a Napier paper, says: “You may be interested to hear that one ot the officers of H.M.S. New Zealand, after an interrupted night, was on the bridge and conningtower from 6.30 a.m- till 3.30 p.m., without anything to eat, on the memorable Sunday when our fleet sank the Blucher in the North Sea. When the Lion dropped behind and the admiral was changing to the Princess Royal, the New Zealand led the squadron in the chase. The officer’s friend writes ; ‘ He enjoyed it hugely ; it has done them all good, and relieved the tension after all the weary waiting.’ The admiral said that the New Zealand surpassed herself, and he marvelled at her speed—she went up to 28 knots. He likes her lines better than any other ship in the spuadron. During the action, and also in the fight off Heligoland, Captain Halsey wore the New Zealand greenstone tiki which the Maoris gave him during his visit to New Zealand.’’
