CLOSER SETTLEMENT.
Mr J. Chkystai.l. has completed the purchase, horn Mr Hammond, at Moutoa, of a block of land, comprising nearly 700 acres for the purpose of closer settlement in that locality. The purchase price was just under ,£25 per acre. The land is part of the original Moutoa estate, and with a little improvement will prove to be unsurpassed for dairying purposes. Mr Cbrystall’s object is to subdivide the block into suitable dairying farms, and carry out necessary improvements, and place settlers upon it. In this respect he has given a lead which others in the vicinity should follow. The laud in that locality is capable of intense cultivation, and we know of several instances where forty acres have given a competency to a family. There is plenty of laud at Moutoa suitable for closer settlement if the owners could be induced to follow the example set by Mr Chrystall. Foxtou’s future is bound up in a large measure with the closer settlement problem, and we are pleased to note that a local citizen is leading the way to a recognition of this fact.
