At a meeting of the Levin Acclimatisation Society it was reported by a member that people were in the habit of going out in the ranges, shooting down cattle, and, after taking off the bide, leaving the carcase to rot ; in some cases the hides were not even removed. It was stated this was illegal, as the cattle were protected, and it was also a sinful waste. These cattle were of use to survey parties, who depended on them for their meat supplies. It was decided to draw the attention of the Government to the matter, through the head'Acclimatisalion Society, and have the practice stopped.

The Reluming Officer in connection with the election of two representatives for the district, on the Wellington Harbour Board, notifies that nominations close on Tuesday next, at noon. The election will take place on Wednesday, April 28th. It was announced yesterday that the Bulgarians had attacked the Serbians, but advice since is to the effect that the conflict is devoid of importance. The relations between the two governments are excellent. Bulgarians, how ever, are reported to have been repulsed in an attempt to cross the Greek frontier. Many were killed and wounded. A number of Auckland bakers were proceeded against in the Police Court on Wednesday, says the Herald, tor selling light weight bread. There were 26 charges in all, and each was dismissed on the legal point that there had been no actual sale to the inspector who had weighed the loaves. The undisputed fact that the great majority of loaves sold were below the standard weight led Mr F. V. Fraser, S.M., to remark that bakers who deliberately sold light-weight bread, with the price as high as it is at present, and with so much poverty in the city, deserved greater punishment than that which the Court had power to inflict. He added that if he had occasion in the future to convict for selling light-weight bread he would have no hesitation in ini posing a heavy penalty and in ordering the defendant to pay for advertising the fact of bis conviction in the newspapers. The usual monthly meeting of the Foxtou Borough Council will be held in the Council Chambers on Monday, April 12th, 1915, at 7.30 p.m. Business ; Notice of motion by Councillor Henderson that the resolution passed on January 26th, 1915. viz., “That the Town Clerk be empowered to lease the Cemetery Reserve for seven years for per annum plus rates,” be rescinded, and to move “ that the Cemetery Reserve be not rated at all and that fresh tenders be called for the lease of the same, without rates, for seven years, and that the highest tender be accepted”; Notice of motion by Councillor A. Spsirs that the following resolution passed 011 June Sth, 1915, be rescinded, viz,, “That the gas manager and an assistant do all the work iu connection with the gas works including work on mains at present laid, services installed and all new services, with the exception of street lighting and the laying of new mains” ; tenders re fire escape for Town Hall and general.
