THE GERMAN NAVAL IS-INCH GUN.
According to an artillery expert writing in a German artillery magazine, the latest naval gun, if the ballistic data which he gives are correct, is a truly astonishing weapon. The gun, presumably of r.sin. calibre, is reputed to fire a shell of oyer 2,0001 b. weight, with a velocity ot over 3,000 ft. a second. If the Krupps have produced such a piece, they must have developed a gun steel and a powder altogether superior to that of any other nation. Velocities of 3,000 ft. per second for large guns were tried and abandoned several years ago because of the severe erosion due to the high powder pressure and accompanying beat. To avoid erosion and prolong the life of the gun the tendency is to increase the weight of the shell and decrease the velocity, the U.S.A. iqin. naval guns having only 2,600 lootseconds velocity, and their 14m. army guns only 2,230 foot seconds, We know that one ol the leading naval Powers of the world recently offered the Krupp agents a very large and remuueiative order for guns of the 15111. high-velocity type if the company would guarantee a certain accuracy of life, but the guarantee was refused.
