THE BAYANO.
The Bayano is the fourth British “armed liner” lost during the war. The well known White Star liner Oceanic, which was commissioned as an auxiliary ciuiser early in August, was wrecked off the north coast of Scotland on September 9tb, fortunately without loss of life. At the end of January, the Admiralty announced that the auxiliary cruiser Viknor, formerly the passenger steamer The Viking, has been lost with all hands, off the coast of Ireland, presumably through bad w'eather or by striking a mine. A few weeks ago the Clan Macnaughton va? wrecked in heavy weather with heavy loss of life. The ayauo is the first auxiliary uiser lost at the hands ot the -emv. British armed liners, of which no fewer than 81 figure in the January “Navy List,” have a record of splendid service during the war, the most distinguished being, of course, the Cuuard liner Carmania, which sank the German armed liner Cap Trafalgar in “fair fight” in the Atlantic, on September 14th. The employmen!. ol aimed liners under the White Ensign, has enabled the Admiralty to dispose of the regular cruisers to the best advantage.
