CORRESPONDENCE.
(To the Editor)
Sir, —I notice in your last issue that the Town Clerk explains that he is not receiving an increase iu salary. In that, sir, he is correct, and perhaps I am to blame iu not putting the case clearly iu my previous correspondence. The position is this; the Town Clerk received the sum ot ,£3O per year for doing certain work. He has now been relieved cf this work, but his salary remains the same, added to which as increase was recently paid to his assistant. In my opinion too much is paid for clerical work, and the question ol finance generally needs more careful supervision by the Council. If councillors were spending their own money instead of the ratepayers’, they would be a little more careful lhau they have been iu the past. Again thanking you iu anticipation,—l am, etc., RATKPAVKU.
