THE BELGIUM RELIEF FUND.
The Mayor (G. H. Slil.cs Esq.) has received a communication from the Minister of Finance (Hon. Jas. Allan) in reply to the resolution passed at a local public meeting held some time since. The Minister says the the question of taxation to meet the demands on the country due to the war, will in all probability be shortly considered by Cabinet. “I have to thank yon,” continues the Minister, “for forwarding the resolution which will have due attention when the matter of increased taxation is under consideration.”
In conversation with the Mayor on the above subject, Mr Stiles pointed out that Foxton in the past had contributed directly and indirectly to ” o various funds and be. b„a received offers of further assistance for the distressed Belgians. The feeling of the recent public meeting however, was that lurlher action should be delayed until the Government had considered what assistance it would render to voluntary giving. So far the Government had not indicated its intention. The Mayor pointed out that he would be pleased however to receive any sums on behalf of the fund in the meantime, which would be acknowledged in these columns. -
