WHEAT SUPPLIES.
GOVERNMENT PREPARATIONS. Auckland, March 9. Speaking at a gathering of his constituents at Waiuku to-night, Mr Massey, referring to the importation of wheat by the Government, said that the Government had the option over a further million bushels, which would be purchased if necessary. He had made enquiries about freight, and the shipping company had asked for per too, but he was not going to pay anything like that, so he made an arrangement under which it New Zealand required, and be bought, that wheat, three captured German steamers would be lent to the Government for the purpose of bringing it to New Zealand. No definite arrangement had been made, but those ships would be available if required.
