CORRESPONDENCE.
(To the Editor)Sir, — I was very pleased to notice a letter iu your Saturday’s issue drawing attention to the iu- ' crease iu the Town Clerk’s salary. I think there is a spoke loose in the Council’s wheel when it calmly allows ,£330 of the ratepayers’ money per year to be expended on clerical expenses for a borough the size ot Foxton, Is it any wonder our roads are so shocking when so much of the rates are diverted to clerical expenses, legal expenses, trips to Wellington, surveyors’ expenses over a piece of road that is a foot or two out or in ? All matters of finance should be thoroughly in-, vestigated and reported upon by a finance committee, but strange to say the local borough council is the exception in this connection. The Town Clerk should not be expected to do the work of a finance committee. In view, sir, of the requirements of the borough, more economy should be exercised. I hope aspirants for the Mayoralty will go thoroughly into the question of finance, and explain this question to a meeting of ratepayers before election day.— Yours in anticipation, Ratepayer No. 2.
